This study examines how craft practices and processes shape architectural concepts and what potential they offer for democratisation and de-hierarchisation in the construction industry. Using examples from the work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Rudolf Schwarz and Peter Zumthor, it sheds light on the complex interaction between architects, craftsmen and other personal and non-personal actors in the construction process, right down to the individual decision-making processes. It shows why craftsmanship played a central role as a mediating factor between material and architectural production in the 20th century and remains indispensable for the construction industry to this day.

wunderkammern als künstlerische Praxis
Sammeln, Ordnen und Zeigen im Anthropozän

What significance do cabinets of curiosities have today? And how can they contribute to our understanding of the present? In contemporary artistic practice, cultural knowledge that was already materialised in the cabinets of curiosities of the 16th and 17th centuries is being updated to describe the Anthropocene. Nina-Marie Schüchter analyses the practices of collecting, organising and displaying in contemporary art that refer back to historical cabinets of curiosities and establishes the neologism ‘wunderkammern’ for the artistic practice derived from them. In doing so, she makes artistic knowledge a model for critical reflection on the present and conceptually comprehensible, contributing to the visual enlightenment of our time.
There will be a dialogue-based presentation of the two books by and with Hannah Schiefer and Nina-Marie Schüchter.
