Hidden Worlds. What do lichens and mosses tell us about climate change and the urban climate?
Workshop with Klaus Fritze and Dr Norbert Stapper
We rarely notice the tiny gardens made up of mosses and lichens that surround us. It is only through a magnifying glass that mosses reveal themselves as small green land plants, whilst lichens catch our eye with their vibrant colours and sometimes bizarre shapes. Lichens are symbiotic communities of fungi, algae or cyanobacteria that can even colonise extreme habitats, such as Arctic rocks, deserts, trees, letterboxes or window panes. Mosses and lichens are also found in the city, and depending on the living conditions, different species grow here in these ‘miniature gardens’. Conversely, they reveal to us just how heavily polluted the air is, how overheated the city centre is, or how rapidly climate change is progressing.

Clean-up campaign with RhineCleanUp
Meeting point: Grabbeplatz, entrance to Kunsthalle Düsseldorf
Together with the RhineCleanUp organisation, we’ll be picking up any litter we come across on our way to Malkastenpark. Afterwards, you can enjoy the exhibition there at Malkastenpark. If you’d like to take part in the campaign, you can sign up here. Registration is not compulsory.
