The ATELIERFENSTER at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf is becoming an exhibition space for art.
Workshops take place in the ATELIER, where people are encouraged to get involved, and many different groups take part. The new ATELIERFENSTER project series creates an exhibition space that bridges the gap between inside and outside. Kunsthalle Düsseldorf sees the ATELIER as a space for encounters and a laboratory for artistic experimentation. We invite artists to intervene – between the exhibition venue and urban space, between fine art and applied art, between the logic of exhibitions and the absence thereof.

In her work Iniusta iustutia (Ungerechte Gerechtigkeit), created specifically for the Kunsthalle as part of ATELIERFENSTER 1, Julia Reisinger combines coloured, translucent films with reflective elements as an analogy for social diversity and the fluidity of boundaries. The colourful installation is reminiscent of the links in a chain. Light and colour shift with a natural dynamism: shades overlap, flow into one another, and seem to dance in a contemplative movement. Amidst the colourful ensemble, yellow and blue, for example, blend to create green. The primary and mixed colours thus bring the art-theoretical colour theory directly to the very place where it is conveyed – right into the ATELIER.

On closer inspection, a structure made of mirrored foil becomes visible in the upper centre. Individual chains of links form the outline of an abstracted set of scales, the lowest links of which are reminiscent of two melancholic, sorrowful eyes. The work changes depending on the viewer’s perspective, reflection and position, so that every process of perception becomes a unique exchange. Viewed from the outside, from the pavement opposite, the motif of the oversized set of scales appears with heightened presence on the Kunsthalle’s facade – fragile and threatening to lose its balance at any moment.

Anyone approaching the reflective set of scales from the inside becomes part of the work themselves. With the Latin title Iniusta iustitia, the artist addresses questions arising from the tension between the Kunsthalle and Düsseldorf’s old town: How do we experience the contrast between prosperity and suffering? What does justice mean in a space where different social realities come into direct contact with one another? What legitimises justice? And what position do we ourselves occupy within this framework?
