The Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw present, as part of the NRW Cultural Season in Poland 2011/2012, a joint, simultaneously running exhibition project that lets a virtual third room emerge from the dialogue between the two spaces. Conceived as a laboratory or “exercise”, the project explores parallel historical phenomena in the artistic traditions of the art academies in Düsseldorf and Warsaw. Both academies played an important role in the emergence of alternative pedagogical models in the 1960s and 1970s — represented on the one hand by Joseph Beuys with his social sculpture and expanded concept of art, and on the other by Oskar Hansen with the theory and practice of Open Form.

The two spaces, run in parallel in Düsseldorf and Warsaw, draw on the architectural features, proportions and particular spatial situations of the respective other site: in Düsseldorf, a situation specific to Oskar Hansen’s classroom in Warsaw is created, while in Warsaw an architecture is built in reference to the two Beuys rooms 19 and 20 at the Düsseldorf Academy. The two spaces thus function as real and metaphorical sites of exhibition and production for the selected artists, who either follow or distance themselves from particular lines of tradition, or enter into dialogue with one another.

The exhibition shows works by Pawel Althamer, Wolfgang Betke, Joseph Beuys, Angela Fette, Oskar Hansen, Stefan Höller, Grzegorz Kowalski, Edward Krasiński, KwieKulik/Zofia Kulik, Josiah McElheny, Anna Molska, Anna Niesterowicz, Palermo, Gerhard Richter, Klaus Rinke, Reiner Ruthenbeck, Franz Erhard Walther and Artur Zmijewski among others.
