MUR BRUT 16
Laura Aberham. INTERFERENZ

For MUR BRUT 16, Laura Aberham will design a wall in the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf parking garage.

Laura Aberham belongs to the young generation of painters who focus entirely on the further development of abstract painting.

In her work, Aberham aims to open up new, sculptural forms of expression from the visual abstraction of the surface.

Techniques and approaches to painting have developed in the artist’s work in recent years which demonstrate her virtuoso handling of the medium. By using this “grammar” of painterly means, colors, shapes, movements, different methods of applying paint, and materiality, she creates works that are overwhelming in their impressive dynamism and dense coloration.

In the work on view, the artist deconstructs her working method and translates the logic of her painting into an expanded concept of the work. Aberham distances herself from the canvas as a substrate and uses multiple sheets of transparent plastic, which she will install in front of the MUR-BRUT wall.

On these layers she opens up the pictorial space and allows the various techniques of her gestural painting to act separately. This creates the impression of a painting that floats weightlessly in the room.
Laura Aberham studied under Professor Jürgen Drescher, Professor Katharina Grosse, and Professor Ellen Gallagher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where she graduated in 2019. She is currently completing her master’s degree under Prof. Ellen Gallagher.
