With the exhibition raumproduktion, the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf launches a new series of exhibitions and interventions in the Seitenlichtsaal. The theme of the first year is space in its many forms. To open the series, Matthias Böttger was invited to devise an overview of the current conditions of spatial production. With his office raumtaktik – office from a better future, Böttger examines the social, cultural, economic and political parameters of everyday spatial production, addressing themes such as globalisation, migration, resource scarcity, economic transformation and privatisation. Building on this, raumtaktik develops possible futures and courses of action together with artists, graphic designers, economists and geographers.

The architects Julian Schubert, Elena Schütz and Leonard Streich of Something Fantastic have divided the Seitenlichtsaal with threads, altering its spatial perception and perspective — a potential of space suggested only by thin, coloured guidelines, oscillating between graphic illustration and sensory experience.

Within these newly created spaces, the exhibition presents works by nine artists: Larissa Fassler, Julika Gittner, Juul Hondius, Ingrid Hora, Jennifer Morone, Michl Schmidt, Alex Schweder, Peter Wendl and Matthias Böttger himself — ranging from psychogeographic models and temporary public sculptures to architectural drawings and seemingly documentary photographs, engaging with spatial experience, transience and the conditions of our built environment.
