Martha Jungwirth
Martha Jungwirth

This catalogue on the Austrian artist Martha Jungwirth (*1940 in Vienna) is the most extensive overview of her work to date, extending beyond the scope of the exhibition. In addition to a foreword for the exhibition by Gregor Jansen, director of the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Jungwirth’s work is discussed in texts by Jurriaan Benschop, Elizabeth de Bertier, and Stefan Trinks. Along with installation views from the exhibition, it also includes an extensive catalogue raisonné.

In this photograph, fields of flowers shown from a great distance are overlaid with horizontal, colored lines. The subject seems abstract and only reveals itself to the viewer at second glance. The division of the picture into a grid as well as the principle of sequence and repetition cause the individual subject to recede, emphasizing the structures and colors. Nonetheless, Andreas Gursky’s photographs are not abstract and always point to an identifiable object.

The photograph Gropius House, Dessau shows one of the masters’ houses that Walter Gropius, the director of the Bauhaus, was commissioned to build between 1925 and 1926. This partly destroyed work of Bauhaus architecture was reinterpreted in 2014 and reconstructed in a contemporary manner. Joachim Brohm documents this iconic Bauhaus object, testimony to a new, modern architecture in the 1920s, in his specific style, which goes beyond the purely documentary.

“The work Storage 2017 is one of the more recent works in which I take pictures with my handheld digital camera. It’s a return to my beginnings. I’m free from the organizational work of the large-format camera. The interest remains the same: pictures composed of light, colors, and structures of the architecture, with objects and their attributions. This picture was taken on one of my trips to Hong Kong.” (Candida Höfer, 2020)
