MUR BRUT 09: Bastian Hoffmann – AIR

For the MUR BRUT project at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, artists are regularly invited to design a wall in the parking garage at Grabbeplatz 4. Bastian Hoffmann has
installed an air pump service station, which any visitor to the garage can use to pump up their car tires.

The service station is connected via a more than 120-meter-long hose to a compressor in the foyer of the museum. Whenever a visitor operates the service station, the compressor
starts up with a loud noise, sucking in air from the foyer and compressing it into the car tires. In this site-specific, participatory work, an associative connection with the institution emerges alongside the physical link. Interior and exterior become connected via the museum and the car tires.

The artwork inherently calls visitors to the garage to action. While those who use the service station are directly involved, visitors to the museum are only indirectly part of the work: they notice the noise from the compressor in the foyer but hardly take note of how it sucks up their used air.

At the same time, the work is also of practical use to people driving their own cars. Within the context of the exhibition Wirtschaftswerte / Museumswerte at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, it also raises questions about air standards, the climate, and the environment.

Bastian Hoffmann studied at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.
