Sibylle Czichon.
Schichtenwechsel
MUR BRUT 19
–
For MUR BRUT 19, Sibylle Czichon will design a wall in the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf parking garage.
During the exhibition project Schichtenwechsel, the artist Sibylle Czichon will make the public space of the parking garage her studio. About every three weeks, she will return to the same wall in order to alter the murals in progress there, or even paint over them with new ones. In the sense of a performative act, the artist will thus shift the focus away from the finished mural and toward the process of painting. Tying in with discussions about departing from conventional painting and ephemeral strategies aimed at breaking up the dictates of the canvas, the painter asks whether and when a picture can even be complete. Instead of a finished picture, Sibylle Czichon withholds the permanence and validity of a claim to finality from her paintings and dispenses with a gesture of completion.
Sibylle Czichon studied painting under Katharina Grosse at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where she graduated in 2019 as a master class student of Andreas Schulze. She augments her abstract style of painting with various materials and techniques such as décollage.
