“As digital-cultural as the phenomenon may seem, ‘Cute Art’, or art that aggressively uses cute imagery, often emphasizes its materiality. Objecthood and forms play a significant role and must be mastered due to the desired effects.” Annekathrin Kohout in Kunstforum International, no. 289, 2023

Aesthetics of the cute have long been shunned in art and are currently undergoing an exciting reassessment. They can be seen as a break in our patriarchal world, where many things that are connoted as childish or feminine are devalued and dismissed as less valuable, even profane. And yet, this uninhibitedness and harmlessness allows us to escape the pain of the world for a moment.

Jiseong Boo appropriates advertising and communication strategies with cute imagery and pop-cultural elements. For Kindino in the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf parking garage, she takes the product of a confectionery manufacturer and humorously redesigns it. She thus reveals a new perspective on consumer culture by pointing to oversized billboards and turning the wall in the parking garage into a consumer object itself. The private desire to purchase triggered by this meets the public space. Kindino is easy to understand and directly addresses viewers with its childish aesthetics and pronounced uninhibitedness.

Jiseong Boo completed her degree under Prof. Dirk Skreber at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 2022.
