The Danish painter Tal R, who was born in Tel Aviv in 1967, grew up in Copenhagen and lives there now, has been building up an intensive, extraordinary and complex oeuvre with an international reputation since the mid-1990s. Mann über Bord (Man Overboard), devised for Innsbruck and Düsseldorf, ranges from very early drawings and collages that have never been shown before via major, familiar work complexes to the most recent sculptures and paintings that are being presented for the first time. A special exhibition staging, designed by Tal R, draws connecting lines that are being presented in terms of both form and content between these individual work phases – starting from painting, developing a colourful, multi-perspective firework display in a kind of environment that fills the entire space.

In his work, Tal R relates both to art history and to popular and underground culture, to music, film or comics, but also to everyday observations, his own experiences and memories. Here he always concentrates on questions about new pathways that contemporary art can take between illusionism, figuration, and abstraction.

The show at the Innsbruck Galerie im Taxispalais introduces the full range of Tal R’s work to Austria for the first time; the show in the Rhineland presents him in such great depth for the first time as well.
